The EIPM is recognised as a leading European Centre for Research, Networking, Education and Action training in Purchasing and Supply Chain Management. In 1997, the Kellogg School of Management (USA) and the WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management (Germany) jointly designed the Executive MBA Program to develop the skills of the current global manager. The program which was modeled after the successful executive program at Kellogg (lastly being ranked #1 of MBA programs by Business Week magazine) integrates all of the managerial disciplines, focusing on a synthesis of American and European management styles. In 2005, the Financial Times ranked the Kellogg-WHU EMBA Program number 5 in Europe, and it is still the only one based in Germany being part of this ranking.The Kellogg-WHU EMBA Program is a general management program leading to the degree of Master of Business Administration (WHU/Kellogg). Taught in English, it is designed for internationally oriented executives who are preparing for senior management. Two demanding years, including residential weeks in Chicago, Hong Kong, Tel Aviv, or Miami, and corporate visits in Asia-Pacific, give excellent exposure and broadens the horizons of the participants. Outstanding faculty and experienced students combined with a strong focus on team leadership involves a unique and challenging academic experience. The objectives of the program are: to instill in the participants a sound knowledge of modern management tools, to develop the cooperative skills to successfully manage interdisciplinary teams, to contribute to a deeper understanding of management in global competition.
The 600 class hours are scheduled over a two-year period: twelve weekends in Vallendar/Germany and six live-in weeks. Weekend classes start on Thursday and run through Sunday morning. The first of the live-in weeks takes place in Vallendar at the start of the program, and another one at the end of the first year. At the beginning of the second year, participants take part in an international two-week live-in session at the Kellogg School in the United States. Another international residential week at a Kellogg partner university - electively either in Hong Kong, Israel, Canada, or at the newly established Miami-location - is held in the course of the second year. The final module will be given during a live-in week in Vallendar.

The Kellogg-WHU Program puts strong emphasis on teamwork. In assigning study groups, every effort is made to provide a diversity of skills among participants and create opportunities for peer tutoring. INTRODUCTION

IIM-A was established in 1961 as an autonomous Institution by the Government of India in collaboration with the Government of Gujarat and the Indian Industry. Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, a noted scientist and industrialist, other Ahmedabad-based industrialists (led by Mr. Kasturbhai Lalbhai), and the Government of Gujarat (led by Dr. Jivaraj Mehta) played a major role in the creation of the Institute. IIM-A was registered as a society with a Board of Governors to oversee the functioning of the Institute. The Board has representatives from the Governments of India and Gujarat, the Industry, the IIM-A Society, the IIM-A faculty, etc.

IIM-A was conceived not to be purely a business school, but a school of management. Missing B in Bschool

You have heard of The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari but what about the monk with an MBA? Eighteen monks from the Jade Buddha temple recently graduated from Shanghai’s Jiao Tong University’s Antai College of Economics and Management. They completed a six-month programme in ‘temple management’, which included subjects ranging from religious philosophy to managing temple finances and marketing religious products.

The results are quite evident. The temple now boasts of a ‘logo’, more shops and even a seminar series on Buddhism run by the head abbot. The seminar cost — $25,000 for a small group — is positioned as a ‘donation for enhancing one’s achievements and morality’.

The Antai programme is being seen as a success. Monks from 28 other temples in Shanghai are expected to attend in the near future. Are there questions about mixing the spiritual with the temporal? Well, yes. But the practical view prevails. “Many think that monks should just take care of the temple and have little contact with the outside world. But the reality is they must manage the temple and deal with money,” said Wang Fanghua, dean, Antai College, to Businessweek.

So, what next? Similar programmes for pundits, priests and imams? Well, maybe, but that is not the crux of this column. Whether you wish to treat a religious body as a ‘business’ is another debate altogether. What’s interesting is, here is a B-school programme which is helping folks to be more efficient in their current place of work, which is not necessarily a ‘corporate’. This is an extremely large segment, practically ignored by Indian B-schools.

Bschools Offer Training To Executives

Six months ago, the Garvin School of International Management at the Arizona-based Thunderbird University launched a new multi-million dollar MBA programme, meant for LG executives. Traditionally most business schools have shied away from exclusive arrangements with corporates. But the fact that Thunderbird is doing this now signals that there is a larger trend in the offing. That of B-schools stepping up focus on executive education and particularly custom-tailored programmes for companies.

While most schools will still not offer a full-time MBA tailored for a single company, they are witnessing a boom in short-term custom programmes. Ian Hardie, associate dean, London Business School, says custom programmes have doubled in size in last three years and revenues have grown from £10 million to £15 million.

At UCLA-Anderson School of Management custom programmes have grown 36% over the last three years. Other schools like IMD, Kenan-Flagler, Tuck School of Business, Chicago-GSB, Darden (University of Virginia), Thunderbird, Harvard Business School and MIT-Sloan have all witnessed an increase in demand for custom programmes.

80% of Kenan-Flagler's executive education programmes are customised today while two-thirds of Darden's programmes are company specific. In India too, IIM-Ahmedabad tied up with Duke University's Corporate Education arm to offer custom programmes in India and West Asia. A study by UNICON, the International University Consortium for executive education, has revealed that more than half of executive education is now customised, as opposed to the traditional open enrollment courses. The trend in this direction has been going on for many years.

It is not hard to see why companies are investing heavily in custom education. "In the developed world, employee retention has become a very high priority. Continuous learning has become a vital part of the retention strategy," says Beth Stoops, vice-president and Head of Corporate Learning at Thunderbird. "Many firms use executive education to help implement their strategies successfully.

For example, if an organisation places strategic emphasis on innovation, they might create an executive education initiative around innovation. Creating such a program ensures that executives have the skills they need to implement the new strategy," says James W Dean, associate dean (executive education), Kenan-Flagler.

Apart from that as businesses go global there is a greater need to build global capabilities and understand different geographies. Says David Newkirk, CEO (Executive education), Darden, "We find ourselves helping clients understand the India and China better both as markets as sources of clients, suppliers, and the cultures of fellow managers."

While the company point of view is easy to understand, why are schools interested in custom education? The most important reason is revenues. Says Newkirk, "Most MBA programmes lose money, with this budget gap closed by a combination of interest on endowment, annual giving from alumni, and contribution from executive education."

Executive education is undoubtedly the bigger revenue grosser for most schools compared to regular full-time programmes. And as far as custom programmes go, schools can charge a higher fee differential there. Executive education accounts for nearly 23% of Harvard Business School's revenue whereas the full-time MBA accounts for just 21%. At other schools the difference is more stark. Thunderbird, for instance, had about 14% or $7 million of its revenues coming from corporate learning in 2001-01. In 2006-07, the projected revenue from the same segment has now grown to 39% or $23.2 million.

Family Business or FMB programmes

Yes, of late, several B-schools have started ‘family business’ or FMB programmes. These courses take in students from family business backgrounds and expose them to modern management techniques and thinking processes. FMB programmes are structured differently from traditional MBAs, but they are two-year courses and suitable for younger members of medium to large family-owned enterprises. The heirs to the throne, so to speak.

NMIMS, Welingkar and Nirma Institute of Management’s FMB programmes fall under this category. SP Jain’s programme — the oldest one around — is slightly different. Here the students are actually expected to work alongside their studies. Classes are held for one week each month; and the rest are spent applying the acquired concepts to their business.

That is a great model, but it caters only to a fraction of a large potential market. While there are dozens of short-term certificates and diplomas for working executives, there are no such programmes for those who operate small businesses. Just like those monks, there are hundreds of owners of shops, trades and manufacturing units who could benefit, especially from fundas on marketing and accounting. Who doesn’t want to attract more customers, or benefit from better bookkeeping?

Of course, such courses need a different approach. As with the Jade Buddha temple, evidence of how the course actually helps you expand your business would be crucial. Less theory, more practice, an understanding of the problems facing small businesses, including addressing lack of confidence in the entrepreneur.

There are several reasons we won’t see such course anytime soon. We have no professors equipped to teach it. Most would consider it beneath their dignity, and none would be able to teach in any language other than English. It is not their fault, of course.

The MBA market here is modelled along global lines. The word ‘business’ in MBA is a misnomer. The programme is, perhaps, Masters in ‘Improvement of Personal Job Prospects’. The corporate giants who recruit don’t care what the student has learnt. Just that he should have the ability to learn it. And this suits B-schools perfectly. They can continue to think of the MBA programme as an art, and a science. That practical stuff? It is none of their business!

Here are some of those thought trails...

a) Our bschools and media (including business newspapers/ magazines) are obsessed with large business houses and multinationals. Whereas so much of what constitutes 'business' is happening in the informal sector, and at the level of individual entrepreneurs.

I think this segment should be covered in the media - as well as tracked/ studied by b schools.

b) Why are quality bschool education/ short term courses available only in English? That shuts out so many potential students. Unlike technical fields, like say engineering, a strong case can be made for teaching business management in regional languages. I can have a flourishing business as a Gujarati speaker who knows kaam chalau or even no English at all.

I guess this is really a problem of our education system as a whole, the obsession with teaching practically all professional courses only in English.

c) Of course, one may argue that concepts taught in an MBA are irrelevant to those with native business acumen. That in fact there is much that we b schoolers can learn from them.

I think at least one course which focuses on the traditional business communities of our country, the way in which they operate, advantages and disadvantages of traditional practices etc should be included in b school curriculum.

Infrastructure is the resources and facilities that an institute has its disposal. Infrastructure consists of various factors like campus area, number of classrooms etc. In today’s scenario access to computers, connectivity etc would be of additional importance to deliver an edge in education.

The Intellectual capital of an institute would consist of the experience of the faculty, number of books, the number of management related books in the library, access to published journals or online journals etc.

The experience of the Faculty of the institute is often a clear indication of the learning imparted at the institute. Keep in mind factors like total number of permanent faculty and whether there is a fair mix of relevant industry and teaching experience.

The level of Industry Interaction is an indication of where exactly an institute stands in real time with the industry.
